September arrives in Alberta.
The nights get colder.
The lake temperature starts dropping.
You return to the same spot that produced walleye all August.
Same jig.
Same depth.
Same point.
Nothing.
You move deeper.
Nothing.
You try shallower.
One tiny fish.
Meanwhile somebody tells you:
The lake is turning over. Fishing is terrible for a week.
Fall turnover gets blamed for an enormous amount of bad fishing.
Sometimes correctly.
Sometimes not.
A September 2025 Alberta fishing discussion was a perfect example. One angler said they had waited all year for fall walleye fishing after having excellent success the previous autumn, only to find their normal spots producing a handful of small fish. They tried depths from roughly eight to twenty five feet and could not find the larger fish they expected. (reddit.com)
That kind of experience is exactly why anglers start talking about turnover.
But turnover does not mean the fish stopped eating.
It means the lake changed.
And when the lake changes, the locations that made sense all summer may suddenly stop making sense.
What Is Fall Turnover?
To understand fall turnover, you need to understand what happened to the lake during summer.
Many Alberta lakes develop layers as summer progresses.
Warm water sits near the surface.
Colder water remains deeper.
Between those two areas is a transition zone called the thermocline, where temperature changes relatively quickly with depth.
The Alberta Lake Management Society describes stratification as the layering of lake water caused by differences in density, with the warmer upper layer sitting above colder deeper water. (alms.ca)
For anglers, that thermocline can be extremely important.
It helps determine where fish can comfortably live.
Summer Fish Are Not Free to Use the Entire Lake
This surprises people.
A lake might be forty feet deep.
That does not necessarily mean the fish have forty feet of equally useful water.
During summer, deep water can gradually lose oxygen because it is separated from the surface.
Fish and microorganisms consume oxygen.
Decomposition uses oxygen.
Meanwhile, the deeper layer may receive very little replacement oxygen from the atmosphere.

So even though your sonar shows deep water, some of that water may not provide good fish habitat during late summer.
The Thermocline Can Concentrate Fish
This is one reason summer fishing can become predictable.
Fish have temperature preferences.
They need oxygen.
They need food.
If the deep water loses too much oxygen and the surface is very warm, the useful habitat becomes compressed.
Baitfish concentrate.
Predators follow them.
You find one productive depth and start catching walleye repeatedly.
Then September arrives and destroys your neat little pattern.
Cooling Nights Start the Process
As autumn approaches, surface water begins cooling.
The difference between warm surface water and colder deep water becomes smaller.
Eventually the density difference between the layers weakens enough that wind can mix the lake much more thoroughly.
That mixing process is fall turnover.
The Alberta Lake Management Society defines turnover as the period when fall cooling makes temperature and density increasingly uniform from the surface to the bottom, allowing wind and waves to mix the lake. That mixing also brings oxygen into deeper water. (alms.ca)
From the perspective of a fish, a lot of previously poor habitat just became usable again.
This Is Why Fish Can Suddenly Seem to Disappear
They probably did not disappear.
They spread out.
During late summer, maybe most of the walleye in your area were concentrated between fifteen and twenty feet because that depth provided the right combination of temperature, oxygen and food.
After turnover, suitable oxygen and temperature may extend much deeper.
Now those fish have options.
Some stay shallow.
Some move deeper.
Some follow baitfish.
Some move onto completely different structures.
Your fish finder may stop showing the concentrated groups you became used to seeing.
Fishing feels worse because the fish became harder to locate.
Turnover Does Not Mean Fish Stop Eating
This myth needs to disappear.
Fish still need food.
Walleye still eat.
Pike still eat.
Perch still eat.
Trout still eat.
The problem is usually location.
Canadian fishing writer Gord Pyzer has explained that after turnover, fish may be able to use portions of the lake that were effectively unavailable during summer because temperature becomes more consistent throughout the water column. (outdoorcanada.ca)
That means the old pattern can collapse.
You do not solve that by fishing the old spot harder.
You solve it by finding the new pattern.
Not Every Alberta Lake Turns Over the Same Way
This is extremely important.
Anglers sometimes talk about turnover as though every lake in Alberta flips on September 15.
It does not work like that.
Lake depth matters.
Surface area matters.
Wind exposure matters.
Weather matters.
The strength of summer stratification matters.
Shallow lakes may mix repeatedly throughout the open water season rather than developing a strong persistent thermocline.
The Alberta Lake Management Society describes polymictic lakes as lakes that experience many mixing periods each year or remain nearly continuously mixed. (alms.ca)
A shallow prairie lake may therefore have a much less dramatic autumn transition than a deeper lake with strong summer stratification.
A Deep Lake Can Turn Over Later
A deeper lake stores more cold water.
It may also maintain stronger thermal layers.
That can delay complete mixing until surface water cools substantially.
A smaller or shallower lake may respond much faster to several cold nights and strong wind.
So if one lake is fishing strangely in early September, do not assume every other lake in the region is doing exactly the same thing.
They might be weeks apart.
Turnover Is Not Always One Dramatic Event
This is another misconception.
People imagine the entire lake suddenly flipping upside down overnight.
In reality, the process can be gradual.
Surface water cools.
Wind mixes progressively deeper.
The thermocline weakens.
The layers become less distinct.
Eventually the lake reaches a much more uniform condition.
A major cold front and strong wind can accelerate mixing.
But there is no universal moment when somebody could stand beside the lake and announce:
Turnover happened at 3:17 this morning.
Think of it as a transition.
How Can You Tell if a Lake Is Turning Over?
There is no perfect shore based test.
A temperature probe measuring the water column would tell you much more than simply looking at the surface.
But anglers can sometimes notice clues.
Water clarity may change.
Floating debris may appear.
Decaying vegetation can be mixed upward.
The lake may smell different.
Surface temperature may drop rapidly after several cold nights.
Fish that were concentrated at a predictable depth may suddenly become difficult to locate.
None of those clues proves turnover individually.
Wind can muddy water.
Rain can change clarity.
Algae can change water colour.
So avoid diagnosing turnover every time the fishing gets slow.
Your Sonar Can Help
If you have good electronics, pay attention to what happened before the fishing became difficult.
During summer, you may have seen a consistent thermocline or noticed fish concentrating within a narrow depth range.
As fall progresses, that concentration may disappear.
Baitfish can show up at more varied depths.
Predators may become scattered vertically.
Instead of seeing one obvious productive band, you see fish almost everywhere.
That can be a clue that the summer structure of the water column is breaking down.
Stop Fishing Yesterday’s Depth
This is probably the most practical turnover advice I can give.
If you caught walleye in eighteen feet of water last week, that tells you what happened last week.
It does not guarantee anything today.
Do not spend four hours proving that the fish are no longer there.
Search.
Try ten feet.
Fifteen.
Twenty.
Twenty five.
Try the first major break.
Try the flat beside the break.
Try the point.
Try deeper structure.
Let the fish tell you where they moved.
Going Deeper Is Not Automatically the Answer
When anglers cannot find walleye, they often keep going deeper.
Twenty feet did not work.
Try thirty.
Nothing.
Try forty.
But after turnover, deeper is not necessarily better.
The fish may have moved shallower because cooler surface water made those areas more comfortable.

That is exactly the approach I would use.
Search first.
Settle down after you find them.
Cover Water With Trolling
This is when trolling becomes useful even if you normally prefer jigging.
You are not necessarily trolling because it is the only way to catch fish.
You are using it as a search tool.
A bottom bouncer.
Crankbait.
Spinner rig where legal.
Anything that lets you cover different depths efficiently.
Once you start contacting fish consistently, slow down and fish that area more carefully.
Do Not Spend an Hour on One Empty Hump
Summer teaches anglers to trust spots.
Fall often teaches them to trust fish.
If you mark nothing and catch nothing, move.
Maybe the hump will become productive later.
Maybe fish use it every October.
That does not mean they are there right now.
Turnover fishing rewards mobility.
Baitfish Matter More Than Your Favourite Waypoint
Predatory fish do not become emotionally attached to the waypoint saved in your sonar.
They follow food.
If baitfish move, predators move.
After turnover opens more of the water column, baitfish can spread into new areas.
Instead of asking:
Where did I catch walleye last month?
Ask:
Where is the food today?
Look for bait on electronics.
Watch birds.
Pay attention to surface activity.
Notice whether perch are concentrated in a particular area.
The predators are usually somewhere nearby.
Walleye Can Become Harder to Pattern
Walleye are probably the species anglers complain about most during turnover.
That makes sense.
Summer walleye can become highly predictable.
Certain depths.
Certain breaks.
Certain structures.
Then suddenly those patterns weaken.
The fish may still be feeding well, but they are no longer concentrated where you expect.
Your job changes from presenting a lure perfectly to finding them first.
Try Shallower Water Than You Think
Fall cooling can make surprisingly shallow water productive.
A rocky shoreline that felt too warm during July may become attractive again.
A shallow point can hold baitfish.
Wind can push food onto one side of the lake.
Walleye that spent summer deeper may move into those areas to feed.
This is particularly useful for shore anglers.
Fall can gradually bring fish back within casting range.
Pike Can Benefit From Cooling Water
Northern pike are another species worth targeting through the autumn transition.
Hot summer water can make shallow areas less comfortable.
Fall cooling changes that.
Healthy weed beds become interesting again.
Baitfish concentrations matter.
Shallow flats beside deeper water can produce.
Points and remaining vegetation deserve attention.
A large pike does not need to remain buried in deep summer habitat once comfortable water becomes available elsewhere.
Do Not Abandon the Weeds Too Early
Vegetation starts dying during fall.
That does not mean every weed bed becomes useless immediately.
Healthy green vegetation can continue holding fish.
Dying brown vegetation is less attractive, particularly when decomposition begins affecting local oxygen conditions.
If you find good living weeds surrounded by areas where vegetation is already collapsing, concentrate on the healthy section.
It can become a fish magnet.
Perch Can Move Too
Yellow perch often form schools.
That does not mean the schools remain in the same place all fall.
Food movement, vegetation changes and water temperature can shift their location.
If your dependable perch area suddenly stops producing, search nearby depth changes before assuming the fish disappeared.
Try deeper edges.
Try adjacent flats.
Look for remaining vegetation.
Once you find one perch, work the area thoroughly.
Where there is one, there are often more.
Stocked Trout Lakes Have Their Own Fall Change
Turnover is not only a walleye lake issue.
Deeper stocked trout lakes can stratify too.
During summer, trout may be restricted by warm surface temperatures and low oxygen deeper down.
Fall cooling can expand the amount of comfortable water available.
This is one reason fall can become an excellent stocked trout season.
Fish that were difficult to catch during hot August weather can become much more active.
Fall Trout Fishing Can Be Better Than Summer Fishing
A September 2024 Alberta discussion asked whether stocked trout could still be caught late in the year.
Several anglers pointed out that cooler conditions can improve trout fishing and that some stocked waters retain fish well beyond spring stocking. (reddit.com)
That is worth remembering.
People think of stocked trout as a May and June fishery.
But a pond capable of supporting trout through summer may become very interesting again once temperatures fall.
Fish May Return to Shore
This is especially useful if you do not own a boat.
During hot summer weather, trout can move beyond easy casting range.
Cooling water can bring suitable conditions back toward shore.
Now shallow areas may contain food and comfortable temperatures.
A shore that felt dead in August can become useful again.
That does not guarantee fish will be standing beside your boots.
It simply means fall resets some of the limitations that made summer shore fishing difficult.
Turnover Can Temporarily Make Water Look Worse
A lake may become cloudier.
Debris may appear.
Material from deeper water can be mixed upward.
That does not automatically mean the lake has suddenly become polluted.
Turnover physically redistributes water and material through the lake.
If the water looks strange during the same period that temperatures are rapidly cooling, natural mixing may be part of the explanation.
But do not use turnover as an excuse to ignore obvious signs of a real water quality problem.
A Bad Smell Deserves Attention
Organic material decomposing in deeper low oxygen water can produce unpleasant compounds.
When deeper water mixes upward, anglers may notice unusual smells.
That can occur during turnover.
But if you see dead fish, distressed fish or a strong unusual water quality problem, do not simply say:
Probably turnover
and continue fishing.
Multiple dead or struggling fish deserve more attention.
Turnover is natural.
A serious fish kill is something different.
Does Turnover Last a Week?
People love giving turnover a fixed duration.
Three days.
One week.
Two weeks.
Real lakes do not follow internet schedules.
The duration depends on weather and the lake itself.
A strong wind event after several cold nights can cause rapid change.
A deep sheltered lake may transition differently.
A shallow lake might never develop a dramatic turnover period at all.
Do not schedule your fishing around a universal seven day rule.
Watch the conditions.
You Do Not Have to Stop Fishing During Turnover
This is the main point.
Some anglers hear turnover and decide fishing is pointless.
I would not.
I would simply lower my confidence in old locations.
Turnover is a search problem.
The fish are harder to predict.
That can make the first hour frustrating.
But once you locate them, you can still have an excellent day.
Sometimes everybody else blaming turnover and staying home actually makes the lake quieter.
Fish Moving Around Can Create Opportunities
When fish leave predictable summer locations, they have to go somewhere.
That may put them into places you normally ignore.
Shallow points.
Different weed edges.
Current areas.
Wind exposed shorelines.
Secondary breaks.
Flats beside deep water.
This is when experimentation pays off.
Your best fall spot might be somewhere you drove past all summer.
Current Can Help Simplify the Search
If a lake has an inflowing creek or river, current can create more consistent conditions.
Moving water carries oxygen.
It can also concentrate food.
You still need to respect any specific regulations around tributaries and moving water, especially during spawning periods.
But from a fishing perspective, current gives you another piece of structure to investigate when the open lake feels difficult to understand.
Wind Becomes Extremely Important
Wind already matters throughout the fishing season.
During fall it becomes even more useful.
Wind helps mix water.
It moves plankton.
It moves baitfish.
It creates current along shorelines.
If one shoreline has received manageable wind for several hours, I want to look at it.
Especially if that shoreline also contains a point, rocks, weeds or another useful structural feature.
Do not choose your fishing location only because it is comfortable.
The calm side may be pleasant.
The windward side may contain the food.
Watch the Weather From Several Days Before the Trip
One cold morning does not necessarily transform the entire lake.
Look at the trend.
Have overnight temperatures been falling for a week?
Has there been strong wind?
Did a major cold front just arrive?
Has surface temperature dropped substantially?
Turnover is driven by changing physical conditions.
The weather leading into your fishing trip matters.
September Is a Transition Month
This is why September fishing can feel inconsistent in Alberta.
One week feels like summer.
The next morning there is frost.
Then temperatures rise again.
A lake can be changing rapidly while the calendar still says early September.
Another deeper lake might hold onto its summer structure much longer.
There is no single Alberta fall fishing pattern.
You need to fish the lake in front of you.
October Can Become Much More Stable
Once turnover is complete and water temperatures continue cooling, fish can begin settling into more predictable fall patterns.
The chaos does not last forever.
This is when fall fishing can become excellent.
Walleye feed before winter.
Pike remain active.
Trout become comfortable in colder water.
Crowds decline.
Boat traffic falls dramatically.
Some of my favourite Alberta fishing conditions happen after most casual summer anglers have already packed their gear away.
Fall Turnover Is Actually Good for the Lake
Anglers complain about it because it can temporarily make fishing difficult.
The lake needs it.
Mixing redistributes oxygen through the water column.
The Alberta Lake Management Society notes that turnover allows deeper water to contact the atmosphere and raises oxygen content. (alms.ca)
That becomes extremely important heading into winter.
Once ice covers the lake, oxygen replenishment becomes more difficult.
A well mixed lake enters winter in a much better position than one with severely oxygen depleted deep water.
Turnover Helps Set Up Winter Habitat
This connects directly with winterkill.
During winter, snow and ice limit light and atmospheric exchange.
Plants and organisms continue consuming oxygen.
Decomposition continues.
If fall mixing replenished oxygen throughout much of the water column, fish begin winter with better conditions.
So the autumn event that temporarily destroys your favourite walleye pattern is part of the seasonal cycle helping those fish survive.
Fishing inconvenience is not the lake’s priority.
The Biggest Turnover Mistake Is Blaming Everything on Turnover
You get skunked in September.
Turnover.
The water is cloudy.
Turnover.
The walleye moved.
Turnover.
The pike stopped biting.
Turnover.
Maybe.
But fishing can be slow for dozens of reasons.
Weather.
Pressure.
Changing baitfish locations.
Water levels.
A cold front.
Fishing the wrong depth.
Fishing the wrong structure.
Using the wrong presentation.
Sometimes we use turnover because it is easier than admitting we simply did not find the fish.
Prove the Fish Are Not There Before Changing Everything Else
This is how I would approach a bad fall day.
Start at a location that produced recently.
Fish it efficiently.
If nothing happens, change depth.
Still nothing?
Move.
Search adjacent structure.
Look for bait.
Use electronics if available.
Try another area of the lake.
Only after covering meaningful water would I start obsessing over lure colour and tiny presentation changes.
Location usually matters more.
My Fall Turnover Walleye Plan
If I suspected an Alberta lake was going through turnover, I would not begin by anchoring.
I would begin by searching.
I would check several depths.
I would look for baitfish.
I would troll or move between structures.
I would compare shallow and deep water.
Once I contacted several fish in the same general area, I would slow down.
Then I might jig vertically.
Cast a jig.
Use bait where legal.
Work the productive area carefully.
The order matters.
Find them first.
Perfect the presentation second.
My Fall Trout Plan
For stocked trout, I would approach the problem differently.
I would take advantage of cooling water.
Start investigating shallower water again.
Watch for surface feeding.
Pay attention to insects.
Fish points.
Try shoreline areas receiving manageable wind.
Use spoons or spinners to search.
If trout are visibly feeding but ignoring lures, adjust the presentation rather than assuming the lake is empty.
Fall trout can be surprisingly active.
My Fall Pike Plan
I would look for the healthiest remaining vegetation.
Then I would connect that vegetation to nearby deeper water.
I would also check wind exposed points and shallow areas containing baitfish.
I would not automatically fish as deep as I did during the hottest part of summer.
Cooling water gives pike more usable habitat.
Use that.
Do Not Put the Boat Away Because September Fishing Was Slow
This is probably the final mistake.
You have two bad trips.
You decide summer is over.
The boat goes into storage.
Then October arrives and some of the best fishing of the year begins.
Fall transition can be frustrating precisely because it is a transition.
The pattern you understood disappeared.
The next pattern has not become obvious yet.
That is not a reason to stop fishing.
It is a reason to start searching.
What I Would Remember About Alberta Fall Turnover
You do not need to become a limnologist to fish through turnover.
Remember a few things.
- Summer can divide deeper lakes into temperature layers.
- Deep water can lose oxygen during summer.
- Cooling surface water weakens those layers.
- Wind eventually mixes more of the lake.
- Fish gain access to different depths.
- Old summer locations may stop producing.
- Not every lake turns over at the same time or with the same intensity.
- Shallow Alberta lakes may mix frequently and show little dramatic turnover.
- Fish do not stop eating simply because the lake is mixing.
- Finding the fish becomes more important than faithfully returning to last month’s waypoint.
That is really the entire fishing problem.
When an Alberta lake changes in September or October, stop demanding that the fish behave like it is still August.
They know the season changed.
