You catch a nice northern pike.
It is legal to keep.
You are already thinking about supper.
Then you start cleaning it.
There is a worm.
Or several little white cysts.
Or the skin looks like somebody sprinkled black pepper across the fish.
Suddenly that pike does not look nearly as appetizing.
The immediate questions are usually the same.
Is this normal?
Is the lake contaminated?
Can I still eat the fish?
Did I just find some horrible disease?
Parasites in wild fish are much more common than many anglers realize.
Alberta maintains information on several parasites naturally found in provincial fish populations, including roundworms, ribbon tapeworms, black spot parasites and swim bladder worms. (Alberta.ca)
Some look terrible and present little or no known risk to people.
Others are a good reminder that wild freshwater fish should be properly cooked.
And there is a major difference between finding a common parasite in an otherwise healthy fish and catching a fish that appears genuinely sick or dying.
Knowing that difference can save you from throwing away perfectly usable fish.
It can also tell you when leaving a fish off the dinner table is the smarter choice.
Parasites Are Normal in Wild Fish
This is the first thing Alberta anglers should understand.
A wild fish does not live inside a sterile aquarium.
It eats insects.
It eats smaller fish.
It eats crustaceans.
It interacts with birds, snails, worms and other organisms sharing the same ecosystem.
Parasites are part of those relationships.
The Government of Alberta notes that diseases and parasites are naturally occurring components of wildlife populations and that most Alberta fish and wildlife remain healthy despite their presence. (Alberta.ca)
So finding a parasite does not automatically mean something has gone horribly wrong with the lake.
Sometimes it means you caught a wild animal.
What Are the Black Spots on a Fish?
This is one of the strangest things an angler can see.
You catch a pike, sucker, whitefish or another fish and notice tiny black dots across the skin.
Sometimes there are only a few.
Sometimes there are so many that the fish looks like it was sprinkled with black pepper.
This condition is commonly called black spot.
The black dots are associated with small parasitic larvae that become encysted in the fish.
The fish responds by depositing dark pigment around the cyst.
That pigment is what makes the spots so noticeable.
Black spot occurs naturally in freshwater fish and has been documented in Alberta.
Black Spot Does Not Mean the Lake Is Polluted
This is a common assumption.
Anglers see an unusual fish and immediately blame sewage, chemicals or dirty water.
Black spot has a natural parasite life cycle.
It involves aquatic organisms and fish eating birds.
The parasite moves through different hosts during its life.
The presence of black spot therefore does not automatically indicate pollution.
In fact, parasite life cycles can be surprisingly complicated.
A parasite might begin in one organism, move into a fish and eventually complete its life cycle after the fish is eaten by a bird.
That sounds unpleasant when you are standing beside a filleting table.
Ecologically, it is normal.
Can You Eat a Fish With Black Spots?
Common black spot parasites found in freshwater fish are generally considered harmless to people.
Government fish health guidance from other Canadian jurisdictions also notes that fish with black spot can generally be eaten when properly cooked. (Government of Nova Scotia)
The bigger issue is often appearance.
A heavily affected fish may simply look unappetizing.
Some spots may disappear when the fish is skinned.
Others may be present within the flesh.
You may personally decide that you do not want to eat a badly affected fish.
That is different from assuming every black spot means the fish is poisonous.
Why Does One Fish Have Hundreds of Spots While Another Has None?
Parasite exposure is not evenly distributed.
One fish may spend more time in habitat containing the intermediate hosts involved in the parasite life cycle.
Another may feed differently.
Age can matter.
Location within the lake can matter.
Environmental conditions can influence parasite abundance.
That is why two pike from the same lake can look completely different.
One might have clean skin.
The next might be covered in spots.
It does not necessarily mean the second fish is dying.
What Are the White Worms Inside Alberta Fish?
Now we get to something even less pleasant.
You open a fish and find a pale worm.
Maybe it is curled up near the organs.
Maybe you notice white cysts.
Maybe there is something long and thin moving inside the body cavity.
Alberta fish can host several types of worms.
One officially documented example is Raphidascaris, a type of roundworm.
Alberta identifies this parasite as harmless to humans and notes that it can occur as larvae in lake whitefish, cisco, burbot, lake trout and Arctic grayling.
Adult worms can occur in northern pike and walleye. (Alberta.ca)
That species list should immediately tell you something.
Finding a worm in a perfectly normal Alberta game fish is not unheard of.
A Worm in a Pike Does Not Automatically Make the Pike Unsafe
Pike are predators.
They spend their lives eating other animals.
That makes them part of numerous parasite life cycles.
If a smaller infected fish is eaten by a pike, a parasite may continue developing in its new host.
The same principle applies to walleye and other predatory fish.
Seeing a worm can be shocking because most of us buy fish as clean fillets.
We never see what was inside the animal.
Cleaning your own catch removes that illusion very quickly.
Wild fish can contain parasites.
Lake Whitefish Can Have Visible Parasites Too
Lake whitefish occasionally concern anglers because visible cysts or worms can be found around the body cavity or organs.
Alberta’s wildlife disease information specifically lists lake whitefish among the species that may contain Raphidascaris larvae. (Alberta.ca)
Canadian wildlife health researchers have also documented this parasite in Alberta lake whitefish and found it did not pose a human infection risk in the investigated fish. (Healthy Wildlife – The blog of the CWHC)
Again, identifying the parasite matters.
Not every worm found in every fish is automatically the same thing.
That is why I would not make broad statements such as:
All worms in fish are harmless.
They are not all identical.
What About Tapeworms?
Alberta also lists ribbon tapeworms among parasites occurring in fish. (Alberta.ca)
This is where proper cooking becomes especially important.
Some fish tapeworms can infect humans when raw or insufficiently cooked fish containing infective stages is eaten.
Alberta Health information specifically identifies raw or undercooked fish as a possible source of tapeworm infection and recommends thorough cooking or appropriate freezing as prevention. (MyHealth Alberta)
That does not mean every visible worm in your pike is a human infective tapeworm.
It means you should stop treating raw wild freshwater fish like something harmless to sample while cleaning.
Cook your catch.
I Would Not Eat Raw Alberta Freshwater Fish
This is probably the simplest practical rule in the article.
You are not preparing ocean tuna at a restaurant.
You caught a wild fish from an Alberta lake or river.
Cook it properly.

Proper cooking solves many of the parasite concerns anglers actually encounter.
You do not gain anything by eating a piece of raw pike while standing beside the filleting table.
Freezing Is Not an Excuse to Guess
People sometimes hear that freezing kills parasites and assume putting a fish in an ordinary household freezer automatically solves every possible food safety issue.
Do not make that assumption.
Different parasites require different time and temperature combinations.
Commercial standards may differ from what an ordinary home freezer actually achieves.
If you are dealing with wild freshwater fish and do not have a specific validated process for raw preparation, cooking remains the simple choice.
What About Little White Cysts in the Meat?
White cysts can have several possible causes.
They may contain parasite larvae.
They may be associated with different species than the parasites you have previously seen.
Do not attempt to identify a parasite with complete confidence solely because somebody online said:
Those are just worms.
If there are only a few visible cysts in otherwise normal looking flesh, some anglers remove the affected area and cook the remaining fish thoroughly.

But if the fish looks unhealthy overall, the situation changes.
A Healthy Fish With a Parasite Is Different From a Sick Fish
This distinction matters more than whether something looks gross.
Imagine two fish.
The first is a healthy looking pike.
Strong body.
Normal eyes.
Normal gills.
Good colour.
No unusual sores.
While cleaning it, you find one parasite around the internal organs.
Now consider another fish.
It is swimming strangely.
The belly is severely swollen.
There are obvious hemorrhages.
The eyes are bulging.
The gills look abnormal.
The flesh looks wrong.
Those are completely different situations.
The first may simply have a common parasite.
The second may be seriously diseased.
Do Not Eat Fish That Look Sick or Are Dying
This is the rule I would follow.
Alberta’s fish disease information notes that some diseases can cause obvious abnormalities including hemorrhaging, swollen organs, bulging eyes, pale gills, abnormal swimming and mass fish deaths.
For some monitored fish diseases there is no known human health risk, but Alberta still advises that fish appearing ill, dying or already dead should not be consumed. (Alberta.ca)
You do not need to diagnose the exact disease.
If the fish genuinely looks sick, leave it off the menu.
A Dead Fish Floating Beside Shore Is Not Free Dinner
This sounds ridiculous until you realize people do collect recently dead fish.
Do not.
You do not know why it died.
Disease.
Low oxygen.
Temperature stress.
Toxins.
Physical injury.
Something else.
You also do not know how long it has been dead or how quickly bacteria have multiplied.
Harvest fish you legally catch alive.
Do not turn unexplained fish mortality into a grocery opportunity.
What About a Fish With Sores?
An isolated injury does not necessarily mean a fish is diseased.
Pike bite each other.
Fish encounter birds.
Hooks cause injuries.
Spawning can leave fish battered.
Parasites can create localized skin changes.
But widespread lesions, severe sores or unusual tissue damage should make you cautious.
If the fish appears unhealthy rather than simply injured, I would not eat it.
Take photographs if you think the condition is unusual.
What About Fungus on a Fish?
Alberta fish can also experience fungal type infections such as saprolegniosis.
These may appear as pale cotton like growths on the skin.
Fish often develop these infections after stress or physical injury.
Again, the practical angler does not need to become a fish pathologist beside the lake.
An obviously unhealthy fish with substantial abnormal growth should not be your first choice for supper.
Whirling Disease Is a Different Problem
Alberta anglers have also heard plenty about whirling disease.
Whirling disease is caused by a microscopic parasite affecting salmonid fish such as trout and mountain whitefish.
Affected fish may swim in a circular pattern.
Young fish may develop skeletal deformities.
The tail can appear dark.
The head may look misshapen. (Alberta.ca)
Whirling disease is not harmful to humans or other mammals.
But it is extremely important to Alberta fisheries because it can damage susceptible fish populations.
This is an ecological concern rather than a reason to panic about human infection.
Do Not Move Fish Parts Between Waterbodies
This is where parasites and diseases become relevant even if you never eat the fish.
Fish tissue can potentially carry disease organisms.
Alberta specifically tells anglers not to dispose of fish or fish parts back into water when trying to prevent the spread of fish diseases such as whirling disease. (Alberta.ca)
Use fish cleaning stations where available.
Put waste into appropriate garbage.
Do not clean a fish at one lake and throw the remains into another.
Your Bait Bucket Can Move Problems Too
The same principle applies to bait.
Alberta warns that even dead or frozen bait can carry diseases and pathogens.
Unused bait and bait container contents should not be dumped into another waterbody. (Alberta.ca)
That means the end of a fishing trip should not look like this:
Dump minnows into lake.
Dump bait water into lake.
Throw fish guts beside launch.
Drive home.
Dispose of biological material responsibly.
Clean Your Fishing Equipment Between Lakes
Parasites are not the only concern.
Aquatic diseases and invasive species can move in water, mud and biological material attached to fishing equipment.
Alberta recommends cleaning, draining and drying equipment before moving between waterbodies. (Alberta.ca)
That includes:
- Boats
- Kayaks
- Waders
- Nets
- Life jackets
- Other equipment contacting the water
This habit is particularly important if you fish multiple lakes or rivers during the same weekend.
Parasites Do Not Automatically Mean Bad Water Quality
This misconception is worth repeating.
You clean a fish and find parasites.
Your friend immediately says:
That lake must be disgusting.
Not necessarily.
Parasites exist in healthy natural ecosystems.
Some require multiple hosts to complete their life cycle.
Fish.
Snails.
Birds.
Other aquatic organisms.
A functioning ecosystem can contain plenty of parasites.
Their existence by itself does not prove chemical contamination or sewage problems.
Clear Mountain Water Can Have Parasites
Water clarity tells you almost nothing about whether a fish contains parasites.
You can catch a fish from beautiful clear water and still find worms.
You can catch another fish from a murky prairie reservoir and find none.
Parasites follow biological life cycles.
They do not care whether the lake would look good in an Instagram photograph.
Parasites and Mercury Are Completely Different Questions
Suppose your fish has no worms.
Perfect.
That does not tell you anything about mercury.
Now suppose your fish has one visible parasite.
That does not automatically tell you anything about mercury either.
Contaminant exposure and parasite infection are separate issues.
If you plan to regularly eat fish from Alberta waters, use the provincial fish consumption guidance in addition to inspecting the fish itself.

The Biggest Pike Might Still Have Consumption Advice
A large old northern pike may look completely healthy.
No spots.
No worms.
Beautiful flesh.
That does not mean you should eat unlimited quantities of it.
Mercury can accumulate in predatory fish over time.
This is why Alberta fish consumption advice considers species, location and sometimes fish size.
A visible parasite is obvious.
Mercury is not.
You need to think about both separately.
Can You Cut Worms Out of a Fillet?
If you find an isolated visible parasite in otherwise normal looking flesh, removing the affected tissue is something many anglers do.
Then cook the fish thoroughly.
The decision also comes down to personal comfort.
You are not obligated to eat something that disgusts you simply because a particular parasite is considered harmless.
At the same time, you do not necessarily need to throw an entire legal fish into the garbage because you found one harmless worm.
Know what you are dealing with.
Heavy Parasite Loads Are Different
Now imagine cutting a fillet and finding dozens of cysts throughout the flesh.
Maybe the parasite is harmless to people.
That does not mean you are going to enjoy supper.
At some point the issue becomes food quality.
A heavily parasitized fish may simply be unappealing.
There is nothing wrong with making that decision.
The important part is not confusing:
I do not want to eat this
with:
This proves the lake is dangerous.
Those are different conclusions.
Do Not Feed Raw Infected Fish to Your Dog
This is a habit I would avoid.
People sometimes clean fish and throw raw scraps to the dog.
If you are already concerned about parasites, giving the raw material directly to a pet makes little sense.
Some fish parasite life cycles involve mammals, birds or other animals.
Other Canadian wildlife health guidance recommends cooking fish rather than feeding raw parasitized material to pets. (Gouvernement du Québec)
Dispose of questionable organs and trimmings properly.
What Should You Do When You Find Something Strange?
First, do not panic.
Second, take a good photograph.
Photograph the parasite before removing it.
Photograph where it was located.
Photograph the entire fish.
If the fish has unusual external symptoms, photograph those too.
Then compare what you found with reliable fish disease information.
A useful photograph can often distinguish a harmless common parasite from something worth reporting.
Alberta Actually Has a Fish Disease Laboratory
The province maintains a dedicated Fish Disease Laboratory that investigates diseases and parasites affecting wild and cultured fish.
The facility includes a parasitology unit as well as testing capacity for viruses, bacteria and other fish pathogens. (Alberta.ca)
That should tell you how seriously fisheries managers take fish health.
It should also tell you that diagnosing a strange fish from one blurry photograph can be difficult.
Not everything unusual is obvious.
When Should You Report Something?
One parasite in an otherwise normal fish is usually much less concerning than a pattern.
Pay attention if you see:
- Numerous sick fish
- Several dead fish
- Fish swimming abnormally
- Unusual deformities
- Widespread sores
- Hemorrhaging
- Repeated strange symptoms in multiple fish
- Something you suspect could be a monitored fish disease
If several fish in the same waterbody look seriously unhealthy, that is useful information for fisheries managers.
What About Black Tails and Crooked Trout?
Those symptoms deserve attention because they can be associated with whirling disease.
Alberta identifies darkened tails, skeletal deformities and unusual whirling swimming behaviour among possible signs. (Alberta.ca)
Do not kill a trout simply because you think it has whirling disease.
Alberta specifically asks people who suspect whirling disease to document what they saw and report it rather than disturbing or removing the suspected fish. (Alberta.ca)
And remember the fishing regulations still apply.
If the trout must be released, it must be released.
You Cannot Diagnose Every Fish Beside the Lake
This is probably the most important practical point.
You catch a pike.
It has a strange lump.
Your friend says parasite.
Someone online says tumour.
Another person says infection.
Another says totally normal.
Unless the condition has very obvious identifying characteristics, everybody may be guessing.
That is fine if the fish is being released.
Take a photograph and learn later.
If you intend to eat the fish and something about it genuinely concerns you, do not force the decision.
There will be other fish.
What I Would Eat
If I legally harvested an Alberta fish that looked healthy and I found one of the common parasites known to be harmless to people, I would not automatically throw the fish away.
I would remove the affected tissue.
Keep the meat cold.
Clean it properly.
Cook it thoroughly.
Then eat it if the fillets looked and smelled normal.
What I Would Not Eat
I would pass on a fish that was obviously sick.
A fish found dead.
A fish with extensive abnormal tissue.
A fish with unexplained severe hemorrhaging.
A fish with an unusual smell or signs of spoilage.
A fish so heavily parasitized that the flesh was no longer appealing.
And I would not eat raw wild freshwater fish simply because I could not see any parasites.
Visible worms are only the parasites you noticed.
Keep the Fish Cold
Parasites receive all the attention because they are dramatic.
Poor handling can ruin your fish much faster.
Once you decide to harvest a fish, cool it promptly.
Do not leave a pike lying in the August sun for four hours.
Keep harvested fish cold.
Clean them properly.
Prevent cross contamination.
Cook them correctly.
Basic food handling still matters even when the fish looks perfect.
The Gross Looking Thing May Be the Least Dangerous Part
This is the strange reality of wild fish.
A visible black spot can be alarming while posing little concern to people.
A harmless roundworm can make you want to throw away the entire fillet.
Meanwhile something you cannot see, such as bacterial contamination caused by leaving a fish warm all afternoon, can be a much more realistic food safety problem.
Do not judge safety only by what looks disgusting.
The Alberta Angler’s Quick Check
If I open a fish and find something unusual, I would go through a simple process.
Does the fish otherwise look healthy?
If yes, continue checking.
Is it a common parasite I can identify from reliable information?
If yes, follow the appropriate handling advice.
Is the edible flesh normal?
Check colour, texture and smell.
Am I going to cook the fish thoroughly?
For wild freshwater fish, I would.
Does the waterbody have separate fish consumption advice?
Check Alberta’s consumption guidance.
Does the fish look genuinely diseased or dying?
If yes, do not eat it.
That approach is much more useful than assuming every worm means danger.
Wild Alberta fish live in complicated ecosystems.
They eat other animals.
Other animals eat them.
Parasites move through those food webs.
Sometimes you eventually see evidence of that on the cleaning table.
It is not pretty.
It is also not particularly unusual.
Learn what the common parasites look like, cook wild fish properly, keep your catch cold and pay attention when a fish appears genuinely sick.
Once you understand what you are looking at, finding one strange worm inside a pike becomes a lot less alarming than the first time it happens.
